Exterior Repairs:
How to Prepare Your Home's Exterior for a Pennsylvania Winter

Oct. 2, 2026

With cold and unpredictable Pennsylvania weather quickly approaching, it’s time to address exterior repairs before winter arrives. Snow, ice, heavy winds, and freezing temperatures can put added stress on your home, so taking care of small repairs now can help prevent larger problems in the future.

Here’s a checklist of what to consider:

Siding Repairs

Damaged, missing, or loose siding can leave your home vulnerable to cold weather and moisture. This fall, look for:

  • Cracked, warped, or loose siding
  • Missing pieces of siding
  • Gaps around windows and doors
  • Areas where moisture may be getting behind the siding

Roofing Repairs

Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against winter weather. Inspect your roof for:

  • Missing or damaged shingles
  • Cracked or curling shingles
  • Damaged flashing
  • Areas where water may be pooling
  • Signs of leaks inside your home

If you notice damaged shingles or other roofing concerns, get them repaired before snow and ice arrive to help prevent water from making its way into your home.

Gutters & Downspouts

Clean and properly functioning gutters are important heading into winter. Leaves and debris can prevent water from draining properly, and clogged downspouts can contribute to ice buildup and water damage. Inspect your gutters and downspouts to make sure:

  • Gutters are free of leaves and debris
  • Gutters aren’t pulling away from the house
  • Downspouts are securely connected
  • Water is directed away from your home’s foundation

Windows & Exterior Doors

Drafty or damaged windows and exterior doors can make it difficult to keep your home comfortable during the winter. Check for damaged frames, deteriorating caulking, gaps, and any areas where cold air or moisture may be entering. Addressing these issues can help keep your home comfortable and may also improve energy efficiency.

Decks, Porches & Exterior Structures

Winter weather can be tough on outdoor structures. Take a look at your deck, porch, railings, and stairs for loose boards, damaged areas, or signs of deterioration. Taking care of repairs before snow and ice arrive can help keep these spaces safe throughout the winter.

Trim, Soffit & Fascia

Don’t forget about the smaller components of your home’s exterior. Damaged fascia, soffits, and exterior trim can create openings where moisture and pests can enter. Look for rot, cracks, loose sections, or other visible damage.
