If you’ve received your proposal, approved it, and met your job manager, then you’re getting ready to have work done on your home. Do you have to prepare your home at all? Do you need to move any of your furniture? Where will your pets be during the process? Here is a quick checklist to make sure you and your home are ready for your contractor:

• • • Let the contractor know if you have pets. Contractors may be moving large and bulky items in and out of your home, and the last thing we want is for one of your pets to run out of the home. If you have pets, we recommend keeping them in a safe pre-designated area of your home.
    • Prep work and cleaning can go a long way. If you’re having walls painted or flooring replaced, taking down your wall decorations and moving smaller items out of the way will save time. If anything is too heavy, your contractor would be happy to help move it, but getting smaller items out of the way is a big time saver.
    • Let your contractor know if there are any dates or times where work will need to be paused, whether you have the time set aside for visitors or you will be away for an extended period of time.
    • Let your neighbors know if you’re having heavy construction work done. While you’re not legally obligated, it’s a nice gesture. Sometimes, the work you’re having done will require big trucks or lifts that may take up parking spaces or make noise.
    • Make sure the contractor team knows where they can access water and electricity for extension cords and hoses. 

The most important thing to remember is to talk to your job manager about what they recommend you do to prepare your home. Every contractor is different, so open communication is key.
