BLM Employee Shelly Rowan

This month, we are spotlighting our office manager, Shelly Rowan! We asked Shelly a few questions about what she enjoys doing both at home and at the office. Here’s what she had to say:

What do you like most about your job?

The people – I absolutely love coming to work. It is not like work to me. Everyone at BLM is so kind, helpful, energetic, respectful, and fun to work around. Heidi and Barry have built a great business and I love working for them. They have created a family atmosphere and have the utmost respect for their employees.

What is one quality that sets BLM Construction apart from competitors?

The communication and honesty from start to finish. We are transparent and have no hidden agendas. We do not cut corners or push high end sales that are not necessary.

What have you gained from working at BLM?

Learning about the construction industry: job costing, AIA progress billing, time and material billing, BuilderTrend, project management, and contracts.

What are your hobbies?

Organization, computers, spending time with my family, travel, cleaning, spending time outside, hanging out by our swimming pool, making new friends, and riding my Harley Motorcycle.

What is at the top of your bucket list?

Travel to Australia and jump out of an airplane/skydive.

Where is your favorite place to go in York, PA?

Our home – I really enjoy our home here in PA. We have everything we need in our own little paradise. We moved here about 2 years ago and we continue to create our home perfect for our needs and for our daughter. She is making it her own little farm with her horse Bo and now her two goats (George and Barbara).  Plus, we love our swimming pool and lots of land to enjoy, it keeps us busy.  Dover and York have been great areas for us, and for the most part, people have been welcoming. We do miss the family we have down south in Savannah, GA.  We can not wait to retire one day back in the south with the sunny warm weather.  Until then, we will enjoy our Dover/York family here making new friends and memories! Plus, I do love my job here at BLM Construction!

4 Ways to Amp Up Your Home’s Curb Appeal

Porch

Does your home have curb appeal? Curb appeal refers to the way your home looks from the street to yourself, people walking by, or potential buyers. There’s nothing like going home to a house with a well maintained lawn, clean siding, flower beds, and an overall welcoming appearance.

Curb appeal will also play an important role in selling a home. The way the home looks is the first impression a potential buyer will have. It will tell them whether or not the home looks well taken care of or if the home has some work that needs done. Not sure where to start? Here are some ways you can add curb appeal to your home:

Clean It Up

Over time, walkways begin to crack, paint chips off, plants overgrow, and surfaces become tinted with dirt. Luckily, this is an easier fix. Power wash your walkway, porch, and driveway to lift the dirt, and trim back any bushes or unruly flower beds. Seed the patchy areas of your yard, and pick up any garbage or clutter items. Having a decluttered and touched up yard can make all the difference.

Create a Welcoming Entryway

If your patio or entryway is full of neutrals and lacking in decor, give it a facelift with a pop of color, potted plants, a chic doormat and outdoor rug, and some furniture pieces. A few great ways to add color are by painting the front door, choosing a color scheme and incorporating it into your flower pots and decor, and by getting seasonal flowers.

Replace the Walkway

If your walkway is cracking, uneven, and unsafe, it may be time to think about a redo. Bricks, stamped concrete, and pavers will give your home an updated, modern look. If you want your walkway to look more natural, stone, sectional flagstones, and slate are great options. If you’d like, take the extra step to line up mulch along the edges of your walkway and plant some flowers or spider plants.

Build a Front Porch

Building a porch is a great way to add curb appeal, and even a small porch can add loads of character to the front of a home. You can go all out with a wrap-around or keep it small and simple with a portico. Customize the porch by adding columns, railings, skirtings, and a base that match the style of your home.
